The question that has been on everyone’s mind – how to make vector images with Midjourney? Here’s a short tutorial. You really only need two things, but we will cover a few other things to show the incredible flexibility you have with creating clipart, vector art, corporate art styles, pictograms, icons and everything else with Midjourney.
- Vector images are digital graphics defined by mathematical equations and geometric shapes, offering advantages like scalability, smooth edges, small file sizes, and resolution independence compared to raster images.
- Midjourney is a powerful tool for generating vector art, offering various parameters for customization and enabling the creation of logos, clipart, and other designs with specific styles and colors.
- To convert Midjourney-generated raster images into vector files, you can use tools like Adobe Express SVG Converter, VectorMagic, Canva, or Vectorizer.AI for quick and efficient vectorization.
What exactly is a vector image?
A vector image is a type of digital graphic that is defined by mathematical equations and geometric shapes (vectors) rather than a grid of individual pixels like raster images (e.g., JPEG, PNG). In a vector image, elements are represented as paths, curves, and lines with specific attributes such as color, thickness, and position.
Vector images (eps, ai, svg) are different than raster (jpg, png, bmp) because they don’t rely on pixels to increase in scale and are more useful file types for print and web. In theory, you can zoom in on them for eternity because they always scale.
The image itself though, has to be able to “vectorize” easily. Usually this means simple, solid fills and bold outlines vs. A full colour raster image (like a JPEG) is like a photograph or a Photoshop image with smokey backgrounds or blending effects. The zoom for the picture is determined by the fixed amount of pixels the picture contains.
Key characteristics of vector images include:
- Scalability: Vector images are resolution-independent, meaning they can be scaled up or down without any loss of image quality. This is in contrast to raster images, which can become pixelated or blurry when resized.
- Smooth Edges: Since vector images are based on mathematical equations, they have smooth and sharp edges, making them ideal for designs that require precision and clarity.
- Small File Sizes: Vector files are typically smaller in size compared to their raster counterparts because they only store mathematical instructions for rendering the image rather than individual pixel data.
- Editable and Non-Destructive: Vector images are highly editable and non-destructive. You can easily modify elements, change colors, adjust shapes, and manipulate the image without degrading its quality.
- Resolution Independence: Vector images can be printed at high quality in various sizes, from small logos on business cards to large banners on billboards, without loss of detail.
Common formats for vector images include SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS (Encapsulated PostScript), and PDF (Portable Document Format). Vector graphics are widely used in various design applications, such as logo design, illustration, typography, signage, and more, where precision and flexibility are essential.
Midjourney prompts for vector art
If you need help to setup Midjourney, read our full guide here. It will help you create an account, figure out the dashboard and how to generate your first image.
Midjourney parameters for vector art
Style parameter: The
--style parameter fine-tunes the aesthetic of some Midjourney Model Versions. Adding a style parameter can help you create more photo-realistic images, cinematic scenes, or cuter characters.
Stylize parameter: The Midjourney Bot has been trained to produce images that favor artistic color, composition, and forms. The
--s parameter influences how strongly this training is applied. Low stylization values produce images that closely match the prompt but are less artistic. High stylization values create images that are very artistic but less connected to the prompt.
--stylize‘s default value is 100 and accepts integer values 0–1000 when using the [default model].
The prompt used in the image above is the following:
white background, [subject], in the style of animated illustrations, [environment], full body, text-based –style raw –stylize [0-1000]
Midjourney prompts for vector art
Let’s understand the possibilities of this now. What else can we create? Well, for starters, let’s look at logos. We will play with the same subject to showcase the differences: “man under an umbrella”.
The prompt here is very simple, because Midjourney knows already about logos and how to generate them, it will create the white background by itself. This is called a mega prompt. When you already know the final result and you can consolidate it into a word, avoiding writing all the tags for describing that result.
All of these can be used for power point presentations, graphic assets, visual communication and visual branding. What if your Midjourney vector art needs to be a specific color? Check this out:
The prompt here simplifies it to two basic colors – black and white. When you see packs of icons or pictograms that contain hundreds of small icons that you want to use with your document or powerpoint presentation, you can now create a specific one for yourself. What if you want a bit more color than black and white?
Midjourney is very responsive with colors, in this example we randomly selected teal and its gradients, to make a logo based on just a specific color palette.
With all of these, remember now you can modify parts of the image, with the new VARY feature. Find out how here.
Also, remember you can select your own color and you can generate the image in a different setting. If you want a more in-depth look at camera angles and lighting, check here.
What about if you want to get extremely creative with your clipart, and want to print it on a coffee mug to give as a gift? Imagination is half of the story in Midjourney, and we leave this part to you. Here are some things to get you started.
These are mega prompts as well. Instead of building this entire scene with a lot of tags, adjective and parameters to try and paint it in this style – you can just jump directly to a famous illustration style and replicate that. If you need some ideas to get started, check out our list of famous illustrators.
This is particularly useful for print on demand businesses, you can generate these as clipart and print it on any type of material – canvas, Tshirt, coffee mug, poster etc.
When it comes to print on demand, you can obviously use a lot more. We tried with a watercolor tulip.
This will scale perfectly, as you can see below when we convert everything to vector file type. The style is raw and stylize 0. For a more creative watercolor style painting, keep the default settings but then converting to vector will be a bit more tricky because of the amount of variation in the pixels.
Creating the actual vector image
This is a two way process. First, use Midjourney to generate the type of art you want. Export the image you want, and now let’s make it a vector image. There are a lot of tools that can help you with this, we will look at the main four:
|Adobe Express SVG Converter
|Quickly and easily upload your image to convert a JPG to a vector file. Convert a JPG to SVG for free online. Requires signing up (easy with Google, Facebook).
|Free to use
|Vector Magic is an online and desktop software program designed to convert JPG and PNG images to fully functional SVGs or PDFs with speed and ease.
|Only works if you pay for the subscription.
|The easiest tool to create images and text combinations, can save everything as SVG. Feature to remove background automated. Ability to export to SVG is for paid accounts.
|User-friendly interface. Background removal feature. Paid account required for SVG export.
|Fully automatic bitmap to vector conversion in one convenient website – just upload your bitmap logo and get it vectorized in a matter of seconds. Great for all forms of printing, embroidery, signage, and more.
