Why is everyone looking to publish children literature?
Children’s books constitute one of the most expansive and rapidly growing sections in both Amazon’s digital realm and traditional brick-and-mortar stores worldwide. The realm of children’s publishing encompasses tailored publications, including children’s picture books, children’s literature, and engaging popular science encyclopedias. At the heart of this landscape lies the picture book, a unique form of children’s literature that artfully merges imagery with language to convey narratives. Crafted to cater exclusively to children, it’s a medium that harmoniously weaves storytelling through illustration. Correspondingly, children’s literature is an artistic and literary endeavor designed or adapted to nurture youthful development and cater to their aesthetic sensibilities.
Children’s books have carved a significant niche, comprising 32.8% of all book sales in the United States as of 2022. The year 2022 witnessed the sale of a remarkable 250.76 million children’s books, underlining the enduring appeal of these literary treasures. Within this arena, sales have increased by a notable 11.37% since 2018.
While print sales dipped in 2021 compared to the preceding year, they remained elevated over the 2019 figures. The landscape as of October 2, 2021, juxtaposed against the previous year, shows the following:
- Juvenile fiction: +13.7%
- Juvenile nonfiction: -4.2%
In 2022, children’s books continue to claim a formidable share, constituting 32.8% of all book sales within the United States. The zenith of 2022 observed the sale of a staggering 250.76 million children’s books. Notably, the category’s preeminence rests upon children’s fiction, accounting for over 184 million annual copies, while the nonfiction sector contributes an impressive 67 million. In a forward glance, the year 2023 anticipates the US children’s book market to burgeon to a robust $2.62 billion.
Within this milieu, the United States reigns supreme, commanding 22.8% of the global children’s book revenue, underscoring its influential standing within the broader context of children’s literary engagement.
Let’s do some math
US Market Children Books Sales 2022
Based on the data above, let’s take a look at the market opportunity for a) writing children literature and b) publishing.
Nearly one-third of all kids’ books sold today feature a licensed character. What does this mean? Looking at this from a different side, it means that two thirds of kids books sold feature a random non-licensed character. This is where children’s books illustrated by Midjourney AI comes into play. How big is the market in the US for non-licensed kids books sold? $1.25 billion in 2022.

But what if I want to publish in another language?
Well, there’s even better news on this front. The US sales of $2.62 bilion amount to only 22.8% of the total world market. That means that the global market for children’s book amounts to something in the vicinity of $11.5 bilion. Assuming the amount of licensed content is similar world wide, it means the opportunity to enter the localized markets is around $5.61 billion (excluding the US).
In other words, there is a $4.23 billion market for non-English children fiction books. Depending on the size of the market (which has a big overlap with the total language speakers plus the people wanting to teach their children a second language), you might have a better chance of writing a best seller if you focus on any other languge besides English.

- children coloring book, minimalist, two elephants
Usually simpler prompts will give you easier to work with images. Based on this, you can do variations, for example:
Creating Children’s Picture Books with Midjourney AI
The prompt used here first is to show that even a very simple prompt will deliver something. Now, this style might be a bit too complex for a children’s book. If you want something more cartoonish or for very young children, use tags like clip art, doodle or cartoon in the prompt.
As with anything, the strength of creating amazing Midjourney Art is to play with the prompt to understand how you can create really unique styles. Whether mixing two styles together, or adding additional tags to the prompt to tweak it until you get what you want.
Some useful tags:
- Style: watercolor / oil painting / pencil sketch / faded pastel
- Colors: black and white / gradients of color / color and color
- Details: detailed / finely detailed / intricately detailed / minimalist
Creating Comic Books with Midjourney AI
This is pretty straight forward, luckily Midjourney already is very much aware of what comic books are and can replicate them pretty well. The main challenge will be to build your scenes in a visual way that carries the story forward.
The prompts you are looking for here are:
- two elephants running, comic book
- two elephants running, comic book, black and white
Advanced Prompts for Illustrating Children’s Books with Midjourney AI
These prompts are particularly useful when you have one main character in your story that takes part in most scenes. With the character design sheet prompt you can create various poses for one particular subject.
This will help you create a cute character, in our example let’s name our elephant Bobby, and you can see in each example that you can generate a single image with multiple variations of Bobby being happy, angry, excited, surprised and a variety of other emotions. With this, I can take each individual pose and use it in different scenes across my entire book.
This will also work if you want to build a more serious oriented book, a cyperpunk or fantasy oriented children’s book series, or maybe a comic book with a specific theme in mind.
The prompts here are simple in their original form, depending what you want, you’ll want to add a bit more details:
- elephants character design sheet
- elephants character design sheet, comic book, black and white
- elephants expression sheet
- elephants expression sheet, black and white
Remember, in Midjourney you have infinte variations, so if you find one option that you like, continue to make variations of it to get from a few emotions or poses, to a few dozen.

Midjourney can do a lot of things, including replicating the styles of famous illustrators. You can then further include more things in the prompt if you want specific colors, if you want to see how to styles look like together and so on. You can create a children book with a very specific style by mixing various elements.
The golden rule of Midjourney is that you can combine anything you can think of. One of the first pictures ever made with Midjourney was a dog with wings. Taking into account this approach, consider some of the famous children illustrators you know and then what type of story you want to write.
This topic deserves a full guide on its own, so we want to do it justice. For now, consider these two examples and you can see how it can shape en entirely new narrative based on the style of the illustration alone.
